If you haven’t heard by now, the iPhone is coming to Canada via the merchant of F.U, Rogers. As predicted their data rates plans are a joke. So, in an effort to effect change, go sign this petition.

Crazy day for ScribbleLive

Posted in Whatever by mad on the May 22nd, 2008

For those of you who remember ShiftEdit, our live blogging platform, we has just re-branded it ScribbleLive and released at beta two days ago. Since then we have been line blogging MESH for the last two days. While I was there I met up with a writer from TechCrunch who was nice enough to write an article about us.

Then all hell broke loose. We made it to The Washington Post and then Digg. Crazy day! Thanks for all the support.

Update: We are in CrunchBase. Yippie!

Click to Give…It’s Free

Posted in Awesome by mad on the April 4th, 2008

The Breast Cancer site is having trouble getting enough people to click on their site daily to meet their quota of donating at least one free mammogram a day to an underprivileged woman. It takes less than a minute to go to their site and click on the pink button near the top that says CLICK TO GIVE Daily!

This doesn’t cost you a thing. Their corporate sponsors/advertisers use the number of daily visits to donate mammogram in exchange for advertising.

Cheers!

Are You In The Dark…Earth Hour

Posted in Shite, Toronto, Whatever by mad on the March 29th, 2008

This Saturday millions of people around the world will turn of their lights at 8PM in honor of Earth Hour, a multi-corporation feel good campaign designed to let the regular folk feel good about themselves.

I thought it appropriate that I upload this photo showing a discarded postcard advertising the event this weekend. Doesn’t seem very “carbon neutral” to me to handout these to ask people to be more environmental.

Here are a few ideas that you don’t have to wait until 8PM tonight to do.
  1. Turn off your damn lights all the time they are not in use.
  2. Leave your earth killing car at home once a week.
  3. Use you own bags at stores.
  4. Shut down your computer at the office.
  5. Switch to an environmental power source.
  6. Plant a tree.
  7. Hug a tree.

Shift Edit Alpha Release

Posted in Awesome, Geeks, Toronto by mad on the March 8th, 2008

ShiftEdit.com

ShiftEdit was first developed in 2005 as an experiment to enable a living web page to be edited right in a browsers’ window without the need for administration status like a blog. Once the page was created you simply click on the text you want to edit, made the change, and presto, it appeared. Jonathan was well on his way to creating the foundation of a real-time Content Management System.

In 2006 in response to the increasing need to discover new ways to use this exciting tool, he build whyyoushould.org a site that allows you to instantly create a “live list” in a free form manner. Simply type in the your text, link to image or video and in appears on the page.

I met Jonathan just when WhyYouShould went live at CTV, formally CHUM at Queen and John. Both of us living and working in the area lead to many discussions on our way home about the “next” big thing. Late in 2007, we came up with the idea of combining these two technologies, ShiftEdit CMS and WhyYouShould into a platform for live blogging.

What ShiftEdit has done is enabled friends and colleagues to collaborate live on any subject while posting text, links, pictures, video and files in real time. The simplified and secure login choice of Facebook or Microsoft Live has give hundreds of millions of individuals instant access. Once posted, the contributors can edit the text, live, right on the page and the update appears on all screens of the bloggers as well as any people watch, instantly, without reloading. This allows for rapid posts that you can change later.

Imagine your blogging team is at an event like a Keynote Address, the Music Awards, or a Lecture at school. Livers (Live Bloggers) can write their commentary on their laptop or mobile device, Photogs (Photo Bloggers) can snap shots on their SLR’s or mobiles phone and email (coming soon) them right to the live blog.

You can check the content and make edits as necessary, all within the live page. No JAVA Applets required, only a browser. That’s what makes it so versatile. If you can run a browser or send and email you can post to this live blog from whichever device you choose.
